Parents earn a sporting chance

THOSE who know me know I don't do sports.

I take photographs of it, because that is my job, but I don't do it, don't follow it and don't watch it.

So knowing I was going to put up with weeks of sport taking over the television would normally have me running for the hills.

Maybe not running, as I have said, that is not really my thing.

More like a casual stroll, complaining all the way.

But now I must confess, I am enjoying the Olympics. It is like reality TV on steroids. Well, hopefully not really on steroids, but you know what I mean.

Only a few days in and I have watched more sport than ever before.

I've marvelled at the rowers, the gymnasts, and the cyclists too.

I've cheered the swimmers and name dropped the Olympians I have met in the past. (Go Anna and the Rocky hockey boys).

And just like the good and bad of reality TV, I've seen criticism of weight, bagging those who didn't come first, and celebrating the underdogs.

The best part has been watching things I didn't even know were sports.

Badminton anyone?

My son has asked that any time we see the "arrowing" events being televised, to let him know. I'm guessing he meant archery.

I haven't always been allergic to watching sports.

I admired the form of Olympic diver Michael Murphy when he competed back in the '90s.

But that is a different type of sport altogether.

Speaking of other sports, I know one us "Super Mums" do every day.

It's a track and field event that incorporates water sports.

Getting the kids to school.

Just think, if it became an Olympic event there could be scores on bed dismount.

We would get points for speed in their showering and bonus points if soap was applied.

We would lose points for an un-ironed uniform.

The quality of breakfast offerings could have difficulty ratings, with extra points for completion.

Disqualifications start if the kids are late for school.

We might not win gold very often, but all parents at least deserve a participation medal.
